Windows update gave me the emergancy stop blue screen

i was doing some windows updates and i got the blue stop screen where it says "if this is the first time you have seen this message..." blah blah blah you get the idea. Why did this happen? any thoughts are much appriciated thanks.

the comp is 6 months old i decided to reformat (i walways reformat every 6 months) here are the relevent specs

a8n-sli deluxe mobo
amd 3500+
512 ddr ram
xp pro with service pack 2
