windows update failed

When i go to the windows update website it searches for high priority updates.
it finds one and says it is already downloaded and ready to be installed. whenever i install it, it always fails but whenever i go back it is already downloaded but always has failed installation.

i am using windows xp pro. i have not yet upgraded to sp2 since it has some issues with some games, and applications i am using

Have you been able to get updates before this ?
Is this a genuine software ?
Is your system malware free ?

Do some online scans for malware. You can find some links below. And run these in cmd prompt :

REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuapi.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wuaueng.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\atl.dll
REGSVR32 C:\WINDOWS\system32\wucltui.dll

i'm not sure whether it is a genuine windows. i was not able to run any online scans since my internet connection was really slow...
i did all those you asked in cmd.
i just installed everest ultimate edition and found a service named *wuauclt.exe its file is wxmst.exe the service is stopped and i do not know what to do with it... any recommendations??
