Hello
I have a serious problem and hope you can help me.
Brief history:
Working on Evesham AMD Athlon(tm) 1.25 GHz, Windows XP home version 2000, SP 2, 1.00 GB of RAM, 80 GB Harddrive.

3 days ago I left the PC on over night. in the morning i had a black screen tellling me it could not boot up.
After 2 tries it did but was extremely slow in loading. Then message appeared the system had recovered from a serious error.
I ran anti spy ware, AVG anti virus, defragmented, registry cleaner, system restore,to no avail. It takes ages to load any programme and even to shut it down.

Message that came up is as above: windows root>\systems32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrrupt, reinstal copy of file.

I have read a number of threads here in the forum but they all deal with restoring the file from a windows XP disk. I only received a recovery disk from the manufacturer and have no idea how to go about it.

Starting in safe mode is no option as I have a wireless keyboard and mouse so cant move the cursor arrows up or down in the safe mode screen.

Would be really grateful if anyone could help. (writing to you from Belgium)

Thank you
Tink

Something similar happened to me last week. Windows Vista woudn't boot (totally blank screen). Unplug it, plug it back in, reboot, bluescreen comes up with an "Unrecoverable Hardware Error". Unplug, plug again, reboot, boot, login, half an hour later same bluescreen.

It turns out I had a failing hard drive. I ran every possible test before I replaced it except for ones that used the HD and they all passed. I replaced it, works fine now.

Another symptom of a failing HD are files randomly going missing or corrupt. I'm not entirely sure this is your problem though, considering you managed to boot and run a few sweeps, however if you do have a failing hard drive the best thing to do is to not use it to prevent further damage. Google "Ubuntu Recovery Remix" for more information.

On another note, one other obvious problem I see is the registry cleaner. I suggest you read the announcement about them here.

EDIT: I Googled the file. The first result that came up might help you, but be careful. A few days ago I had someone try to repair the boot.ini file and somehow he screwed up and now there's six copies laying around his HD for no reason. He can boot now, but still..

Thank you fot that Nofew.
Unfortunately I have used it and am now stuck with it. My harddrive is fairly new, about 2 years old.

But as you say, your and my problem are very different.
I have saved my docs and pics to another harddrive but not yet my emails and dot really know which programme to use for this. Have lost a little faith in the things that are out there.

I desperately hope I do not have to reformat and whether there is a possibility to recover from this with a recovery disk.

My drive was around that age too. Thermaltake seems to have very unreliable hardware.. (Long story)

To backup your emails, simply drag them out of your email client and into a folder. It might help to hold ctrl and press A to select every email in the current folder first. Sometimes while it exports emails it appears to be frozen (Once it even brought up the "program is not responding" message on me). Just be patient and let it do what it needs to. If it asks you to 'end the program now', just ignore it.

The disk might help. If you're any good with shells you might be able to copy the required file from it and onto your hard drive, although I'm not sure where it would be located on the disk. I can help you with the shell but unless I know where the file is I'm pretty much useless.

sorry, system froze again.
Re emails: I thought it was not possbile to drag and drop emails in XP, what about the address list?
I am not good with shells at all and havent got the foggiest as to where to look for that particular file so am well and truly stuck. Perhaps one of the admins here has an idea?

Hello and welcome to TSF,

http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...-spyware-help/

Please read “Virus/Trojan/Spyware Removal Help “ and follow the instructions
very carefully; then, post all the requested logs and information in the Virus Help Forum
Please ensure that you create a new thread in the Virus Help Forum; not back here in this one.
Please be patient, as the Security Team Analysts are usually very busy; one of them will
answer your request as soon as they can.

Note: You dont need to save your emails, they will be there even if you have to wipe the harddrive.
Internet and your pc are 2 different places.
The only files you need to save maybe is your personal files that are on the pc.
