Hi everyone. I recently bought 2 1GB DDR to upgrade my PC from 1x 512MB and 1x1GB DDRPC2700.
However when they are installed the computer loads up fine saying that the 2048GB ram is OK and there are no error beeps but when the windows logo appears when it either resets or freezes.
My motherboard is an AS Rock P4i65GV with 2 memory slots each capable of holding a max memory of 1GB.
I am not sure what speed the new memory is as the only script on them is 64x16 and frankly I have no idea what that means.
Any help would be appreciated.

Knowing the brand and specs of the new RM would be helpful. You Mobo will accept DDR 400/333/266 non-ECC, un-buffered memory.
Lower tier Mobo's can be more selective about the brands of RAM they will be compatible with.
Have you tried booting using stick at a time?

First off thanks to everyone who has replied.

OK I've ran the BIOS with the old set and new set installed. The new set is a Dual Channel 166Mhz DDR333, the only difference between those and the old set is that these are Dual Channel and the old ones are single channel. Unfortunately I have no idea if this is what is causing the problem as Dual and Single channels are new to me.

I was also wondering whether because the motherboard is recognizing the memory if it's a problem with Windows and if so would re-installing windows after installing the new memory help at all?

Lastly the sticker on the new memory says DDR400 but the BIOS says DDR333, is this the same thing or are the stickers on the new memory wrong. I bought the memory from ebay (yes i know) but i've had memory from ebay before and it's worked perfectly.

The speed of the memory "DDR333 166MHZ" can be edited within the BIOS. It should match whats on the sticker for the memory. Its possible someone changed the sticker but I doubt someone would go through the trouble.
Change the speed to "DDR400 200MHZ" in your BIOS. That could be your problem. Also, wouldn't hurt to run Memtest on each new stick of memory just to make sure they are ok. Just google Memtest and download, burn to cd, and it will run on startup. Let it make several passes on each stick individually for the most accurate results. Another words, put one stick at a time and run Memtest.

Good Luck

Thanks again for the replies everyone.

I've changed the RAM setting in BIOS but it didn't solve the problem. I also tried running memtest from a CD but the computer resets before it can start.

I tried starting windows in Safe Mode but it gets to SYSTEM32/DRIVERS/AGP440 and stops.

What do you mean it resets? Does Memtest open at all? If by your response, you mean the system crashes or randomly reboots during memtest, then I would say that memory stick is most likely bad. Even brand new memory is sometimes defective. I've had it happen twice to me from two different manufactuer's over the years.

I didn't notice in the thread, did you try both stick individually and in different slots? I've had systems where one slot on the motherboard was acting up and the computer would freeze up but the memory worked fine in other slots...Just a thought.

Hope it helps

Sorry, I changed to BIOS to boot from CD and forgot to save the settings.

Anyway I've checked each memory stick in each slot with memtest and there were no problems.

The only thing I can think of is that it's a problem with Windows XP, either that or there is a little gremlin hiding inside my motherboard.

Well thats interesting...I would say to try that ram in a friends machine that accepts the same type/speed of memory if you can. (MemTest is good but its not perfect.) If your old memory still works in your machine, then it almost has to be a conflict between the new memory and your current motherboard.

As Tyree said,
Lower tier Mobo's can be more selective about the brands of RAM they will be compatible with.
Another words, just because the speeds and everything match up, sometimes there are still instances where two products don't work together.

Sorry...Maybe someone else has a better solution/suggestion for you.

I did have a reply for this, but I lost it in some screw up last night.

Anyway, I'd go along the lines of suggesting that the RAM you have purchased isn't properly compatible with your motherboard. You may be able to flash your BIOS to a newer version however, in an attempt to see if it improves compatibility. Failing that, you should take the opportunity to return the product. Some might charge a chunk of a restocking fee, but hopefully you should be able to get a full refund. Check the return conditions of where you got it from for those details. If you are willing to exchange it for something else through them, they may be more willing to do so without any hassles.

You should use the Crucial website to track down your computer, and print out specifically what is compatible with your motherboard. Then you can be more sure about your purchase next time.
