When messenger is running on my xp system, my cpu usage looks like a square wave going between 1% and 100%. It makes the computer unusable while messenger is running. An SCVHOST process uses around 70-80% and messenger uses the rest but when the messenger process is killed the SCVHOST goes to 0% as well. The problem just started without warning when i rebooted recently. Ive tried reinstalling messenger with no effect. Id really apprecite any ideas or recommendations, thanks!

hello there Captain, whats happening ? Did you try to uninstall the messenger and checking your resources usage ? and Im assuming you're talking about SVCHOST, which is short for service host...and it does just what the name implies...it hosts services that run from DLL's and if one of them fails to start, or tries to start repeatedly, it will consume much of CPU time... What you can do, at command line in XP, type tasklist /SVC to see what comes up...it might a culprit to your CPU business other than the MSN thingy...also, you can type services.msc at command line to get information about service that are running...

HTH :D
