Go to Start/Run and type appwiz.cpl and press enter. In the Add Remove Programs uninstall Windows Media Player. this will roll WiMP back to the previous version. (ex) if you have WiMP 11 it will roll back to 10. Restart and try it again. If this fails, then uninstall with Revo Uninstaller. Be sure to do the Advanced Method and remove related files in the Registry. Restart the computer. Now you can download the latest version of WiMP for XP.

I tried using revo uninstaller.
when i use it & try to uninstall mediaplayer it doesn't appear on the revo uninstaller list. what could be the problem.? is there a way to clean up the registry as wmp appears to to be uninstalled already.
