Windows Media Player Alternatives?

6570 Views 11 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Laxer
Hello one and all,

Today I am chasing a replacement for windows media player. But, there are conditions:
1. NOT WinAmp
2. NOT iTunes
3. Must have library capabilities (eg. TV, Movies, Music)
4. Must have decent compatibility with various formats (eg. .mkv, .avi, .m4v)

The reason for this is I used to use iTunes, but I've been making the switch to HD video and well, iTunes plain old sucks at playback with anything more than SD video.

Any ideas would be great, a few I've tried are:

WinAmp
J.River Media Center
iTunes
Songbird

J.River seemed perfect, but a lot of compatibility issues were coming up.

P.S, I'm also not a huge fan of the Windows Media Centre style apps, I want something less obtrusive if possible.

I just can't seem to win.

Cheers,
JVT

Thanks to both of you, but VLC doesn't suit what I'm looking for. I'm chasing something with library functionality. I'm picky, I know lol
i may be mistaken but does vlc not have a playlist/library feature?: Chapter 3.  Basic use of VLC
If I understand correctly, the KMPlayer which Sobeit linked to above is what you're looking for.
