Vista lost settings+other stuff after crash

Hi guy

1st time posting in a tech forum so if I miss out any details or anything let me know or if Ive posted in the wrong board could a mod be kind enough to move to the correct board :)

I have Vista on a Dell Laptop. Quick backstory, Ive been a longtime user of the free version of AVG as my AV, around a month ago when I tried to upgrade to the 2011 version I had an installation error and couldnt get it installed, so for around a month I used PC Tools AntiVirus as my AV.

Last night PC Tools Antivirus froze during a scan, it had done that once before but when I restarted it was fine. I was unable to restart when I noticed the freeze as I had a few poker tourneys running and it didnt close when I hit End Task so I left it frozen on the screen for around an 2-3 hours. My whole comp then completely froze and wouldnt respond at all so I had to do a hard reboot. When I got back in my settings have been randomly changed and/or disappeared. MSN no longer auto remembered my username and password, Skype didnt remember my password and gave me the new user screen at startup, Itunes is giving me an error about being unable to connect to the sync server, Chrome had returned to default settings and when I ran a game from CD it couldnt auto find my last saved game (Normally has a button for continuing last saved game, this was greyed out with error message about an XML parsing error). The tech support for the game told me to delete the settings folder which I think has worked but I only made sure the game loaded up after I did that.

Also I play on a number of poker sites and it seems to have randomly forgot my username and/or password for some sites despite having all of them set to remember username and pass, however some sites were unaffected. And on at least 1 site, all the notes I had kept on players have disappeared but the file for all the notes still exists in my system.

Does anyone know exactly what the problem is and how to fix it? I have since managed to install AVG2011 and ran a full scan and uninstalled PC Tools AV.

Thanks in advance :)

EDIT - Notes are missing from at least 2 poker sites, the notes files are in tact on my system but the sites arent picking them up and displaying them on the system.

Also some of the graphics from the game I was playing are missing

Re: Vista lost settings+other stuff after crash

Start by getting rid of AVG - it's the weakest antivirus on the planet and your problems may well have been caused by malware that it's let through. PC Tools is not much better either (plus it's a huge drain on system resources).

Avast Antivirus Free is much more reliable, and the recently released "Outpost Security Suite Free" is probably the best free online security package currently available.

Im running Vista Home Edition on a laptop.

I posted this thread over the weekend....

Since then, I system restored back 24 hours before the crash, got rid of PC tools and AVG, installed Avast and Outpost security suite. I have ran full scans and repairs with both and I have also ran full scans and repairs with Trend Micro, Windows Defender, CCCleaner, Spybot, Ad-Aware and Advanced System Care however I still have the same problems.

The major problems Im having is that my system randomly freezes and I have to hard reboot when this happens. I also have a problem with Windows Explorer crashing a lot when I go into lots of the settings such as some of the control panel settings e.g. Ill click on display settings and click on something within that and I get the "Windows explorer is no longer responding and will now restart" pop up and then it restarts.

This is the error log from one of the crashes when I clicked for the update history of windows updates.

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

All help will be appreciated, it seems that everything I scan my system with doesnt pick up the 2 main problems so anyone with a solution or even tips to try to find what is wrong exactly will be helping me out massively as I need a reliable system for my job.

Exception code 0xc0000374 = heap corruption -- "misbehaving" code has corrupted the data heap

Data heap = area of memory reserved for an app

I would start by remove ALL security apps -
- Ad-Aware
- Outpost
- Trend Micro
- Spybot
- Avast

Avast removal -
Trend Micro -
Outpost -

Use program uninstall for others (leave Windows Defender alone).

Reboot after each removal.

Install MSE -
