In the Sound Events/Sound Scheme, take the drop down arrow, Under Windows Default, you may see Default, Choose this. See if there are more event sounds.
You can also create your own Sound Scheme: highlight an event and press the Browse button, to C:\Windows\Media choose which sound you want that event to play.
If other things are missing besides sounds, you may find that your User Profile is corrupted. Go to Start/Run and type control userpasswords and press enter. Here create a new user with admin rights. Log out of the user you are in and log in as the new user. See if the Windows Default sounds are back.
