Hey guys, i recently went to a friends house with my laptop and i could not connect to his wireless, it shows the router in my wireless connections box but when clicked it goes off and nothing happens after. I can only connect to my router at home as it connects automatically when it is within distance and i would like to know how i can resolve this problem as i won't be able to connect to other wireless routers/hotspots on my laptop, i have tried troubleshooting and everything doesn't seem to work. help will be much appreciated.

It's possible your friend's router settings are configured to block your access to the device.

You can set routers up to deny access to any device not in a "whitelist", so if the router doesn't have your device in the list it defaults to blocking it. Likewise it could be encrypted with a key that you don't have, etc.

It sounds to me like the router is probably shutting your laptop out and is configured to do so.

I don't think that would be the problem because say for example i turn off my router, my laptop only searches for my router when it is turned on and the router is within the distance to if i turned my router off and tried to reconnect to it i would click it in the menu it would dissapear then i would have to restart my laptop for it the reconnect.

Sorry . . can you restate the problem? . . what you describe is normal.

What Operating System? . . Are you using Windows to manage the connection or third party software?

I'm using windows 7, it's the wireless connections panel that open when you click in the the little taskbar next to the clock. When i click my chosen internet access and click connect it just disappears at nothing happens after that?
