If it's a full Retail version (ie: not an upgrade disc), you should simply be able to reinstall or perform a Repair.

If all else fails, get the DOS bootable iso disk tools from the HDD manufacturers website. You can then boot from the disk tools CD and partition/format the HDD. You should then be able to load the OS fresh onto the blank HDD.

It varies by OS and what is actually being done. You typically get a progress bar or some sort of indicator that it's working.

I've not had any experience with Geek Squad as I've been doing it myself for years. I'd say try them or a local repair shop, whomever can give you the best price.
