Currently, I am running Vista Ultimate 32-bit, and trying to install Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. I have backed-up my entire system to an exterior drive. Upon inserting the W7 Pro disc I get the following display: "Windows is loading files ..." then "Starting Windows." Then you can hear the DVD stop, and the only display is a black screen with "Starting Windows" shown.

Nothing else happens and I have to hold down the start button to shut off the computer.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

I can only suggest that you format the entire hard drive with KillDisk, then try the Windows 7 x64 installation again.

KillDisk - http://www.killdisk.com/downloadfree.htm

Make bootable KillDisk ISO CD w/ ImgBurn -
ImgBurn - http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Please note that I do not recommend upgrading from x86 to x64. There are very few apps written specifically for x64 that will be able to take advantage of x64's no 4GB RAM limitation. You can of course run x86 apps on x64, 99.9% without any problem whatsoever; however, those x86 apps are still subject to x86 memory limitations - eventhough running in an x64 environment.

I do hope that you have located signed x64 drivers for all devices - otherwise they will not load rendering that particular device useless. Check in with the Device Manager for the device listing -
StART | devmgmt.msc

Good Luck to you.

To jcgriff2:

Your instructions and assistance addressing my Windows 7 install issue is sincerely appreciated. It is such a help to get experienced advice.

Windows 7 is installed and I am very pleased with this OS. Quite a significant difference (much quicker) in boot up and shut down times.

Thanks again.
