I have Win med cen ed on this pc but it also has a separate physical drive and I would like to try out W7 rc on that and dual boot.

Is this possible?

as long as you have the space there should be no problems install win7 rc in the 2nd drive. You can point to it during the install - it is either the second or third screen during the install.
