I just bought an Acer Aspire 5336 Series from my friend, the laptop worked flawless, but, he had a lot of programs, video editing, music editing, games, ect. I decided I wanted to do a restore back to factory settings, well, about halfway through the restore, it got an error, now when I try to boot from the HDD, it says a file is missing from System32. It tells me to use the repair disk to fix it. I put the repair disc on a USB, and tried to boot it up, I get message saying "Error Loading Operating System". I Struggled with it for a bit before I decided to try to load Ubuntu on to it instead, I put Ubuntu on a USB stick, went to boot, same error. I also get the same error with Windows XP, I tried to format the entire drive, but the formatting program gets the same error when booted from. I am confused at this point. The thing is I have a Desktop and now this laptop, the DVD Drive in the Desktop doesn't work, that is why I have been using the USB Stick. Could the fact that I am using a USB be the problem? Rather then a CD/DVD? I need some help, I am pretty desperate at this point, thanks. :frown:

the DVD Drive in the Desktop doesn't work,
I thought you were trying to get the laptop to work? So, the laptop must have a working CD/DVD drive? Can't you put a Windows disc in the laptop?

this might sound obvious but did you try changing the boot option settings in the BIOS from your laptop?

make sure the USB works fine, try booting Ubuntu from the Desktop.

I don't have the Windows disc as I bought the computer from my friend who lost it awhile back, and I cannot burn a Windows repair disc on my desktop because the drive does not work.

Yes I am positive it is booting from the USB stick, 1st boot option is USB, plus the error I receive from try to boot from the HDD is different from the USB so I know the computer is attempting to boot from USB.

Ok. Did you tried the USB on your desktop to make sure the USB is bootable?

if you are 100% sure the USB key works and is bootable, plug it to the back of the laptop.

1. make sure the USB is bootable
2. try a different USB key and port on laptop
3. find an install disc or Windows PE from a friend
