I am currently sharing an office that has a few computers that are getting a little old. They run Vista and have 2GB of RAM with "Intel Pentium Dual Core E2180 / 2.0 GHz" for the CPU.

Problem is that those computers have slowed down significantly with this year's software version, and it may be a better option to upgrade the 3 computers than to continue with the on-going issues with these computers.

I would like to upgrade, but at the lowest cost possible with a very real improvement in function (I know I will get a lot from the new O/S over Vista). I can just go to Dell like the old computers (Vostro 200) to save more money, but if I could build myself, I wouldn't mind it----but I've never built a system with anything newer than the LGA 775 series so I don't know what will be just enough, what will be overkill, and which will provide the best bang for the buck.

If you were building a new computer for general purpose, cheaply, and yet significantly faster than the 2.0Ghz E2180 + Vista, where would you start?

Edit: I was looking at the G620 for LGA 1155, but the i-series seems to set the standard.....I'm guessing the i-series is overkill, even the i-3, and at double the price it wouldn't be necessary for some intuit software.
