I have had many, many problems with the Windows 7 operating system. It has stopped working and required my sending the computer back twice, and I don't want to have to do it a third time.

My current problem is that yesterday the computer went black and turned off for no apparent reason. Then when I rebooted, instead of the win7 taskbar, it had the windows classic taskbar. In addition, when I tried to change the theme to my custom one, it would not let me and all the themes that were not for windows classic were grayed out and un-selectable. When I tried to use the internet to download a new theme to fix this (in theory) I found it would not access the internet and the IntelProSet Wireless was not in the quick launch tray or whatever it's called. When I used an ethernet cable, it failed to connect as well. The volume controls also failed, as I discovered trying to play a game and see if it'd work later. It did not work later, not even when I restarted.

Basically I have a functional system for word-processors and the like, but no network capability and the windows classic theme. Now how do I know it's not the machine-- a sony VAIO VGN-NW-150J? I am using said machine's one-touch web access function to write this. It is obvious that the programming system is to blame, as it is not the driver or the ethernet port/wireless. it is infuriating to have this happen, as it infinitely inconveniences me for doing work where I need the internet. I need something I can copy and paste, or at least look at the internet and a word processor. Does anybody have any ideas?:upset::upset::upset::upset::upset::upset::upset::upset::upset::upset: [In case you can't tell, I am very mad.]

Hi, in addition to JC's good advice I would also go to start, all programs, accessories and right click on command prompt select "run as administrator". At the prompt type:-

chkdsk/r (press enter) You will receive a message about the volume being in use and an option to run at next boot Y/N press Y and restart. Will run through 5 stages and then boot into windows... can take quite awhile.

Also, machines don't just shut off without some underlying cause. The screen going black and power being lost would indicate a hardware or power problem, not a Windows one. Windows 7 was the same across all 3 machines, and yet all 3 have had issues (2 of which you've sent back). Either you're the unluckiest person in the world, or there's something wrong here which could be affecting your hardware - hopefully the other thing in common here, you, is not the cause ;).

Can you give us a bit more background into where these machines came from, how Windows 7 was installed on them, and what (if anything) you've added to or installed onto them that you can remember?

It's actually just one machine from Sears, sent back and forth repeatedly. It had Vista on it, and part of the reason I don't like sending it back is it requires me reinstalling it (as well as being without a computer for a week or two). I'm leaning towards mechanical issues, too. I noticed that everything else works perfectly, so maybe it's a damaged processor or something. I really don't know. I also found that a new user account has the same problems, so it's not just for that one. Thanks for the help so far, though. I will try these methods, and see what happens.
