win98 lockup problem. help.

1604 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Doonz
after formating the hdd running win98 on an old celeron machine (for office use), i reinstalled win98. after that i also installed office 2000 pro and norton systemworks 2002.

when running excel or quickbooks (accounting software) or any other software that could push the celeron to some extent, the computer locks up after some time of usage (a few minutes). the mouse moves but other than that the pc seems to be locked.

ctrl-alt-del doesn't work so the reset button is the only solution to restart.

any suggestions to remedy this problem would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum! A couple questions, how much ram do you have and what video card do you have? The mouse staying active is a little wierd but I have seen it happen before.
it's a low end machine. it was working fine before format with the same hardware specs (except for the vid card). last time i checked it has around 32mb of ram. the video card was upgraded to an s3 savage sometime before it was formated.
Word to the wise- as an emergency after a crash of an Elsa erazor x card at work, I bought a s3 savage4 agp with 32megs of mem. the card performed so poorly even with the latest drivers that I yanked it and dragged an old matrox g100 pci with a whopping 4 megs of memory out of the closet. The matrox out performed the s3 in every app. Now in win98 running a non openGL based game the S3 would kill the G100, but there was an openGL glitch in the S3 chipset that was never resolved.

Upgrade the vid driver. If that don't work, go to office max and buy an 8 meg pci card for 39.95 and put it in.
32 MB is not even close to being enough to what you want to do....do you self a favor and MAX out the machine....the celeron is not the problem...on intels page, hidden but there are white papers that showed celerons out perfoming comperable PIII's....also if C+A+D dont work think video...it is working you video is acting up so you dont see it....good luck
