Win XP SP2 USB doesn't recognize iPod Mini

I've got an iPod Mini that used to work. It died and Apple sent a refurbished replacement. It works fine at the Apple store, but now WinXP SP2 (w/USB 2) won't recognize it (three different computers), though they all work just fine reading other USB devices (Kodak and Nikon cameras, 256 MB Mem Sticks, external hard drive audio recorders, etc.)

The Apple store computer (a Mac, of course) can recognize the same iPod Mini and cable just fine.

Any ideas? This is frustrating me to no end. Is there anyway to force a USB port to query for connected devices? Any reason why the iPod is ignored when all other devices work?
