I had to reinstall Windows 98 SE recently but since then, I've had all sorts of grief. These include ......

- unable to save password in sign-on box for connection to internet (you can key it in when you sign on or in Internet Connections dialogue box but it's blank again next time you sign on)

- I can't print an A4 photo from Adobe Photoshop 6 without the system hanging 75% of way through print

- I can only upload about 30 0.5mb images from my camera through the USB port to Photoshop before it hangs ....... previously I could upload 150 without a problem

- If I run System File Checker, it hangs after about 15 seconds - when I shut-down via Start-Shut Down, I get a screen message saying it's safe to switch off whereas previously it just shut itself off !

What do I need to do to restore stability ? Do I need to reinstall drivers for all the hardware I have connected (scanners, printer, etc) ?

Getting desperate ....... any help appreciated !

yeah I think that's what I'd do. Actually uninstall the drivers and then re-install and poss do a de-frag as well.

By the way I had major probs with Win 98 SE and upgraded to Win2000 - luurvely I recommend it.

Welcome to the forums Paul33

Did you do a clean install or did you install it over a previous install?

Unclean !

I installed over the top of the previous version. The only thing wrong with the old version was that I'd accidentally lost vmm32.vxd (oops !) and thus couldn't get Windows to run ...... even in Safe mode !

You can try reinstalling the drivers and see if that helps.

As far as the internet connection thing goes create a new one. But only if you are comfortable in doing this sort of thing...:D

If it works delete the old one...:)

Tried that ....... still refuses to store the password !!!

Incidentally, the "SAVE PASSWORD" box on the Dial-Up Connection dialogue box is grayed out ........ does that offer any clues ?

I can answer the "greyed out" question tomorrow if no one gets it by then- It happened to me a long time ago but my kid is sleeping right now and I can't invade his room to test it out without waking him up. His is the only computer left in my house with win98. I think it's a client for microsoft networks or something like that you have to add. See ya tomorrow...........

?

You may have better luck doing a clean install. I would suggest reformatting, creating a new Dos partition and brand new install of the OS. So far as I know, CD-ROM's, Floppy/Hard/other drives are recognized by the system. But other hardware/periferials' drivers need to be reinstalled (you need to install software for a CD-RW to write).

I second the motion

A clean install is the only way to get rid of ALL the ghosts. After doing just that 10 or 12 times and loading all the drivers and the backups of your software it will seem quick and easy. Trust me.

BTW, just format and boot to the cd for setup. Enable large disk support (FAT32). It automatically creates the primary dos partition mentioned above. But it will work that way too- kinda like a car with a stick shift VS an automatic.:D

You can try removing dialup networking from add/remove programs windows setup section, Just uncheck the box, apply and restart.

Then try setting it up again...;)

Wipe the OS

Clean install the hole thing, prev. windows files from Win98 are not always deleted when installing over the top. FDISK the thing re-partition, then format to make sure the drive is clean.

MR. OGAZ

With all due respect, sir; I have had a hard time understanding what you are writing. Are you from another country and are having a hard time with english? There are translators you can download to help us help you. And if you can help us, you can only help if we can understand you.

Am I alone in my misunderstanding of the OGAZ posts?

no no no, I believe it could be code, I wonder who he works for..... what the deal hear??

oh yeah, Paul33, The only way to get rid of your problems is to clean boot and install win98 SE, that will get rid of 100% of your problems. Win98 SE has alot of drivers preloaded into. But you might need to get some others for whatever perephirals you have

Best of luck
