Have a Dell Inspiron 8200 model PP01X that the HD failed. I configured the CMOS to boot from the CD ROM and removed the Hard Drive but the laptop will not boot from the CD. It always returns to the HD. I used multiple CDs that boot in other PC. Any ideas or diagnosis?

Did you "Save" the settings before exiting the Bios? Are you certain the optical drive is good?

Have you tried a new cmos battery? I've got a 9400, and that's from 2006, your battery may be running out of juice.
