Do you have a License for XP?

You can almost certainly speed up the machine by configuring it properly -
Is it fully updated?
What security software is installed?
What other programs are installed?

You can uninstall all of the Junk from the previous owner if you like. It looks like this computer does have drivers for XP: eMachines Support - Downloads & Support Documents - Desktop / EL Series / EL1300G
But I don't think it will run faster with XP. Besides, Microsoft is discontinuing support for XP as of April 2014. If you want to reinstall Vista, you can do so by accessing the Recovery Partition Go to page 57 of the manual to show you how: eMachines EL1300G-01w | User Guide - Page 57
You can play games in Compatibility Mode in Vista. Using Windows 7 or Vista Compatibility Mode

Do you know the specs of the laptop? How much ram is in it? What kind of video chipset does it have? In order for vista to run properly you need a minumum of 2 gigs of ram and a video card with 128 megs of ram. I would suggest upgrading if you can to win 7 and adding more ram. Most pc's and laptops will give you more memory for the video chipset if you add more system ram and since upgrading the onboard video is impossible so adding more ram will help. Make sure there are drivers for your laptop that work on win 7 before you go this route also check the documentation for the laptop and see how much the laptop can take and what kind of ram you can use.
