Hey there everyone...well I have a problem. Okay so im sitting on the floor watching the TV when all the sudden a loud buzzing sound comes from my computer. The buzzing sounds like well...Im not sure how to explain it but maybe it sounds soft of like a fan. Anyways it was pretty loud so I turned off the computer and turned it back on only to find it that it was still there. So i let windows load up to come here and ask. Since then the sound has dropped greatly, but it is obviously still there. Is there something I can do about this? Should i be concerned?

Where is the sound coming from exactly? Many times the power supply fan can become a bit loose, and virate making a buzzing type sound.. then it go's up and down in intencity as time go's on. See if you can hear more where its coming from. If this is the problem, it shouldnt cause any trouble other than the sound of it.

Hey, yes, it seems as though the sound (now almost gone) is coming from the fan in the back. What should / can I do to fix the problem?

I had trouble with an intermittently noisy processor fan once. I managed to quieten it down for a while with a tiny spot of oil applied to the bearing on the end of a miniature screwdriver.

I had to get a new fan in the end though.

Ya.. you can try to tighten the fan.. it may be a bit loose. But eventually it points to replacing the fan. Its only a few bucks though. Please if you work on it, make sure you disconect the power plugs.

Also, check to see if there is a build-up of dust on the fan blades. Sometimes if enough dust gets on them it will cause the fan to be slightly off balance. If so just use canned air to clean it.

Also check if there is any power/IDE cables touching the fan blades.

The fans that are used in the typical PC are pretty short lived, I replace them routinely. I've lost count of the times I've ripped the cover off a P/S and replaced the fan. I keep a bunch of the popular sizes handy, and I regularly order replacements.

Could also be that you have a CD ROM in your drive and your system, or more likely, your Anti Virus software is attempting to scan the CD drive. Check your AV software and set it so as not to check your CD ROM drive. This "loud noise" comes most frequently from "burnt" CD's also.
