I recently bought a 80 gb Platinum 3.5 series hard drive. Got it as a refurbished model and came wiht no manual or discs. I formatted and created a partition using Swissknife, and the program and Windows recognized it as a 80 gb drive. I tried moving some files to the new hard drive to test it out and it worked perfectley.

I thought everything was going fine until I removed my old drive and the new one and placed them in another computer as slaves so i could transfer data between the 2. However, when i booted into windows and used the internal os formatting option, the hard drive size was suddenley reduced to 31 gb. Not the partition but the total hard drive size itself. Even the BIOS now recognized the hard drive as 31 gb. Also, when looking at the partition created by windows using swissknife, the volume name was corrupted.

I tried everything from completeley wiping the hard drive to rewriting the MBR but nothing worked. I even tried programs like Casper and Partition Magic to look at the hdd and even they recognized it as 31 gb. Even when i moved the new 80 gb hdd to my old computer, both the bios and windows recognized the hdd as 31 gb. Files can still be written to the hdd, and they can still be read from it, its just that the hard drive size dropped from 80gb to 31g.

Im completely stumped as why this happened, and wondering whether using the internal windows format option caused it, or the hdd simply failed.
