I tried updating my computer last night. After the updates have been downloaded, this screen appears:

There are about 40 updates that I've not yet installed. I've tried going through and just randomly selecting them, to see if that would work, but it doesn't.

What could be causing this? Is there anyway to fix it without doing a clean install of XP? I searched on google, and everything I tried that I found, didn't help.

Try updating through the Windows Update Site. If the updates fail, you should see an error on the page (example 0x0008005). This can provide a more specific reason for the failure.

I've been trying the update site, but it just won't work. I went back today and now there's only 10 left that haven't been installed. I tried again and it still just wouldn't work. I didn't see an error number on the page anywhere, it just said to use the troubleshooter to try to solve the problem.

Are we dealing with a legit version of Windows XP?
Yeah I bought it a couple of years ago for another computer I had, got a new computer about a year ago and used it on it. I haven't had any problems installing updates until recently. I can access the update site, let it scan my computer, download the updates, but they just won't install.

You purchased the copy of XP with another computer, or for another computer? Big difference. Easy way to answer the question, when you bought the first computer, did it have Windows XP on it already?

I bought Windows XP Professional separately. The other computer it was installed on is no longer in use.

I'm still using the same hard drive out of the other computer. Whenever I switched it over, I went ahead and did a clean install of XP.

We are experiencing the same issue. It began after a "Windows Re-install in Place" or, choosing the Upgrade Option during the install process. The 1st update, for Win Insaller 3.1 worked. The subsequent 75 High Priority Updates downloaded by failed to install (same screenshot as above). MS ackknowledges that this is a problem (after a repair) for auto updates and recommends a manual install of at least one update using Windows Updates. After performing the one update the rest will install automatically.

Any insight would be appreciated.
