Guys,

I've successfully setup 2 domain controllers using Windows Server 2008R2. Each sits in it's own virtual machine(VMWare Workstation). In the settings of the VM i've allocated it 4GB with 40GB HD space on each workstation. Since adding my second DC, whenever i power up both VM's it starts booting up the server however the message 'Applying computer settings...' stays on the screen much longer roughly 5-10 minutes before i can log onto any of my machines. Even if i turn on 1 VM and boot the server it simply takes a long time to boot up. Can somebody provide any suggestions/checks that i can do to help increase the performance of both my servers. When i had just the 1 server it booted up fine but now after adding my second server it takes forever.

Just to note that the PC i have it running on is one that i build my self with:
1TB HD
Win7 64-bit pro
i7 processor
32GBRam

Any suggestions would be good

Do you notice any messages in the event viewer on the server(s)? Are both DC's part of the same domain? And lastly, how often do you shutdown the DC's?

Both DC's are part of the same domain, i tend to shut down my DC's whenever i turn off my VM's or whenever i don't need to use it. In the event viewer(i assume within my DC(s)? ) what messages should i be looking out for?

I spoke to a colleague and he suggested that instead of shutting my DC's i should put my VM's in a standby mode. Looking at my settings their is a setting called 'Suspend' and Suspend Guest. Do you think that whenever i do not want to use it i should use this option?

Note, that this is a personal project of mine so i'm not expecting to get these things right as i'm simply learning from this project.
Thanks

Ultimately the controllers know they've been shutdown and they're looking for their replica partners, which they're not finding. DC's are normally not shutdown. I'd say that suspending them might be a better alternative if having them is just for your own knowledge and not production.

And out of curiousity, what kind of messages were you referring to and where i.e would that be under 'System' tab in event viewer as their are quite a few categories to look at. I only ask simply because i'd like to troubleshoot these problems and understand why certain errors occure and yes this it not for production use.

If you know of any good examples of typical errors i can look at via the web or sometihng like that then that's fine

I would say under system or applications, but most likely under system. You'd be looking for error messages. Really you can look at all of them and it probably wouldn't hurt to do that.
