For some reason my netgear DG834G ADSL modem router which should take about 1min to establish a connection to the internet doesn't it takes about half hour and i cant figure out why all the settings (to my knowledge) seem to be correct the multiplexing method is correct (VC-Based), VPI = 0, VCI = 38, DSL mode = AUTO (multi-mode) and it obtains ip address and DNS server automatically. SO im a bit lost for words if anyone thinks they can help that would be much obliged.

Have you tried a different modem? Perhaps the ISP needs to get involved? Could this simply be bad connections? After it connects, does it work properly?

when i use the normal speed touch ADSL modem and actually click connect it establishes straight away. however I have been through 2 of the same netgear routers as i thought the first one as faulty but it turned of that they both did the same thing, (don't have to click connect on router connects automatically even when PC is shut down) and to answer the other question when it eventually gets online there is no problem with it, bit of a puzzler...

Well, I'd have to consider a different router. I presume you've reset them to factory defaults, and that didn't do the trick?

When you're connected directly to the ADSL modem, please do this.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Windows XP with SP2.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Reset TCP/IP stack to installation defaults. netsh int ip reset reset.log

Reset WINSOCK entries to installation defaults: netsh winsock reset catalog

Reboot the machine.
