Why is my upload speed much slower than my download speed?

I'm on the Zen Full Fibre 900 package on the CityFibre network and I'm currently using their FRITZ!Box 7530 AX router. I'm a bit puzzled by the speeds I am getting, as I get around 910-925 Mbps download but the upload speed is much lower at around 340-350 Mbps and I'm wondering why. I did have access to an ASUS router for a short time and from what I recall, I was getting around 600-800 Mbps upload at that time. FYI, I measure the speeds using an ethernet cable connected to a relatively new Windows 11 laptop with Wi-Fi turned off on the router and other wired devices disconnected. I have tried resetting the ONT and rebooting the router. I've also tried testing in Safe Mode with networking. Any ideas about what else I could try?

What you're experiencing is normal. Your ISP controls it and at peak hours resets to existing traffic. If it was really low then there are standard remedies. I live in the boondocks and mine is under 1 Mbps. 16 for download.

I was getting much higher speeds with my ASUS router, so I think the problem lies with the FRITZ!Box, rather than the internet service. My service is 900 Mbps download and unspecified upload, but here's what I was getting earlier in the year with the same ISP: Download 893-921 Mbps; Upload 891-895 Mbps

I phoned my ISP this evening and the support agent went through many things, including settings on my PC, but she was unable to identify the problem. However, after our long telephone conversation, I carried out speed tests using my previous PC Specialist laptop, which my daughter now uses. That gave a download speed of around 450 Mbps and here's the really interesting bit, an upload speed of almost 800 Mbps.

As I've said, the first thing you need to find out is, what exactly are the speeds you're paying for in your internet package. If you have 2 computers, test each of them with a wired connection to your router, one at a time. If they do not correspond to the speeds you're paying for, connect directly to the ONT and test again. If either test is slower than what your package provides, you need to get your ISP to send a tech out to look for the problem. That is the easiest way for you to check it.

I've already done the tests (see my last post) and I now know it's possible to get almost 800 Mbps upload, so something is not right with my computer. Also, it's not possible to connect my computer to an ONT on the CityFibre network. I'm going to contact my computer manufacturer (PC Specialist) tomorrow to see if they can advise me what to do. My ISP is keeping my support ticket open, pending a further update from me.

Good news - I think I've resolved it!

I'm not 100% sure how I did it, but after I reset the ONT again this evening (after pulling the power plug out of the FRITZ!Box), holding the reset button in a bit longer after all the lights went out and only releasing the button when the red light had changed to orange, the following speed tests (after turning the router back on) reported a dramatic improvement. I did three tests and these were the results to the nearest whole number: Download 900 Mbps, 922 Mbps, 917 Mbps; Upload 850 Mbps, 764 Mbps, 802 Mbps.

Note: Prior to undertaking the tests this evening, I also installed the Inter Driver & Support Assistant and that carried out three updates on my laptop after I ran it, so maybe that helped as well.
