I am occasionally trying to play older DOS games (such as Terminal Velocity, One Must Fall 2097, etc.) and the audio seems to go into a "changing loop" (which sounds rather annoying). It almost sounds like my buffer is not the right size or something. What is the deal?

ummm....

well iam sure you dont use these games with linux. but sometime xp has some bugs . like yours for instance . the game could be too old and could confuse your cpu. it happened to me once.

if you dont want that anoying noise put speekers off.

iam sure you want the sound of the game but you would have to see what audio card you have. if it is new it might not have the right buffer like you said. and xp is faily new so iam sure you dont have an old card.

Advance AC97?

I believe this is it. All I really know at this point is that it is integrated into the motherboard of my new HP Pavilion 743c. It being new, it may have "too much" buffer and it is confusing the audio processor. I hear everything in the games correctly except for the fact it is in a "moving loop". The only game that has worked properly so far is Wolfenstein (which is hard to play when you're used to today's games!).

Terminal Velocity is pretty good.

Why do you say it's a hype game? I played it years ago and it's fairly good. I also play One Must Fall 2097 (a sequal to that's coming soon). Both games go into a dynamic audio loop and I want to know what's going on and how to cure it.

Just to mess around (might work) run the Dos program in compadibility mode set for Win95 .. It may work .. may not but it wont hurt anything.

Now to get to DOS.

I haven't figured out how to get to XP DOS mode, otherwise I would have tried that already. Will try it as soon as I hit DOS mode.

Just got done trying it.

I found how to get to XP safe mode--frantically pount F8.:p While there, I tried all my DOS games. Not even Wolfenstein would recognize it, and several of the games did not appreciate being run.
