OK here is some real help--

If you're using Windows copy and paste, then that's the problem, and it's twofold. I learned 15 years ago not to use Windows copy and paste functions to copy my files.

It's just plain unreliable, has no CRC checking and is freaking awfully slow. Was burned bad once using them.

Copied about 500MB from one drive to another making a backup, reformatted the source drive, months later I lost a file and went to my backup drive just to find out every copied file was corrupted.

So go and download Teracopy, This is the older version I'm still using today on Win 10 22H2. There are newer versions but this is and has been a great utility. It can replace Windows file copy and paste but has 5 extra features, the Windows utils don't have

1. CRC hash checking.
2. verify with copy
3. verify only.
4. if for some reason the backup stops, you can continue where you left off
and most importantly
5. the highest file copying speed you can get.

Since I've been using it I can say that I haven't had any back files getting corrupted. The program will tell you if a copy didn't pass the CRC check and verification.

This is Teracopy v2.3 on the Internet Archive https://archive.org/download/teracopy_202308/teracopy.exe Someone graciously upload it for in perpetuity.

It's a free version and use to downloadable from Teracopy's website. I did not like the new GUI so kept using the old version

If you find that Teracopy does not copy faster than your current method then it's either a cable issue, port issue or most likely a driver issue. I'm using an 8-year-old laptop with a SSD and get up to 70MB a second.

You should be getting way higher speeds.

I also have a USB 3.0 hard disk caddy with 2 2.0 USB ports and 2 usb 3.0 ports on my laptop.

Speed is dependent on having a good hi speed USB cable. bought several off eBay and Amazon and even though the cables were advertised as USB 3.1 it's a crap shoot on the speed. Some of those cables only get 20MB a second.

So buying a more expensive cable may be in order.

Bought a multipack of five about 6 months ago off Amazon and it sounded like a great deal. They were listed as USB 3.2 cables and worked great. Problem is recently the cable coating started pulling out of the ends, exposing the tiny wires inside.

Those wires in a short amount of time started showing the bare copper wires. The second I see that on them I toss them.

Of the 5 I got, 2 are still in good working order.
