I'm an XP enthusiast at heart. I like the interface and it's served me very, very well. However on the dawning of games that incorporate DirectX 10 I'm considering changing my OS to a Vista. A couple of questions,

1) Is the impact on gaming that DirectX 10 gives actually significant?
2) Can I download DirectX 10 on XP?
3) If the answer is yes to 1, and no to 2, then which version of Vista is the most "gamer friendly"?

Thanks in advance,
Bryn.

If you just buy the retail disk or OEM disk, those have no added software unlike those crappy pre built systems from Dell or HP. It'll just be plain vista till you add more stuff your self

The same Version of Vista is good. Vista Home Premium.

If you get the 32bit, then you'll have a memory limit which will affect your serious gaming. If you get the 64bit, then you can get rid of the memory limit which will help in your gaming. However, both versions are known to have huge compatibility issues so think again if you need the directX10 badly or a stable gaming pc.

Given that Vista is not worth the resource hogging, stick with XP and follow what they say: Get Windows 7 64bit when it comes out.
