which processor is better i5 660 or i5 750??

Complicated, it really depends on the software and load on the CPU, if the program is single or double threaded than the faster clock speed Dual will run faster, but if you run multiple programs, or multi-threaded programs the Quad will be faster even at the slower clock because it's process more data at once, more cache is always better regardless of the core count or speed.

can u help me figure out which software or program uses double or multi threads as i am totally new...............its my first time i will assemble a pc and as a student(preparing for engineering college) wanna assemble with best features.

I just wanna have faster speed , music and video playback with HD quality , gaming options open for future and internet surfing ...
will you prescribe a list of other hardwares required with any of the above processors like chipset , and other specifications

Music, Surfing, HD video, Office type programs are not CPU intense, Video Editing, Image editing, Cad/Catia, 3d rendering and some games are, as we move forward more and more programs especially games will use more cores, but Office apps, video playback are not CPU bound by any means and will have no need to. For the price at present the i5 750, or Phenom II 955 make a very impressive setup.
