I have a WiFi adapter that's in a extension cable and I was wondering if that would affect downlaod speed and if i should put the WiFi adapter in the wall. My downlaod speeds range from 60mbs at somepoints all the way down to 1mbs and I was wondering if this had anything to do with it?

Why in the wall? The less objects WiFi has to go through the better the signal. In other words, a WiFi antenna on the roof would be better.

What is the advertised "up to" speed your ISP says you should be getting?

What is your Download, Upload and Ping speed at Speedtest by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test ? (Click Go once you get there).

Perhaps the actual make/model of this adapter would help us understand your issue?

If you're referring to a USB wifi adapter attached to a USB M/F cable extension, place the adapter towards your router and up higher rather than down on the floor. USB wifi adapters don't typically have great performance so the adapter is most likely the reason for slow speeds or try to get closer to the router.
