Can I ask a really stupid question?
It's about locating downloaded files. Not the ones where I select save and then select a folder but the ones which don't offer that. For example right now Java is downloading but the files are not going where the existing Java files are (C:/Program Files/Java).
My question: how can I find out where files have downloaded to?

If you know the name of the file, even partial name. You can do a Search. If you only know the extension, for Java it is .jar or .idx, you can search using a wild card (search: *.jar) Java files are stored under C:\Documents and Settings\yourprofilename under .java, .javaws or jpl_cahce folders. Be sure you are showing Hidden Files and Folders.

this has actually bugged me for while with xp. in firefox i can tell it exactly where to put the downloaded files in the option. where is it for the IE???

In Firefox go to Tools/Options/Main/Downloads put a check box in Always Ask Me where to Download. It will also tell you the current download location.
