the 975 and 965 is the intel chipset on the motherboards

the 975 is usually more full featured and probally will have more future proofing for quad core = more $$$$

the 965 was the fist chipset for core-2 the 965 enjoys the reputation of a less fussy plug and go system less $$$$

I havent checked within the last month but at first release of Core-2's the 975 motherboards were selling for what I call "stupid" money ($200.00 & more)

and about overclocking, I have never done that before, is it safe, I know it is going to diminish the processor's life but in what speed?
Could it last for 5 years smoothly?

I really doubt you will find yourself needing to overclock an E6600

if you do want to; you will want to buy the expensive high performance PC8000 memory; like the crucial Ballistix etc

they are in the ball park of $500.00 for 2 gigs ??????????????????????

The E6600 runs better on the 975X chipset, than on any of the 965 chipsets.

The E6400 runs best on the 965P chipset, overclocks extremely well on this chipset.

Any C2D will be more powerful than the Athlon 64 X2 4600+ and quite a bit better than the Pentium 4 531.
