hi, i have a 4 year old sony laptop. pcg-r505gl

1.2g p3
256ram
16mb video

i would like to install linux, but there are sooo many versions, i have no idea which one would would be best.

My personal favorites are in my signature, rated by ease of use for beginners.
Many "distros" of Linux you can boot "Live", that is, boot from the CD without installing Linux. That way you can make sure before you install that your computer can handle it, and that all your hardware is compatible. Googling, I see that various versions of Linux have been successfully installed.

First thing I'd do is at least double that RAM. 256 is marginal for most of the modern GNOME or KDE distro's.

The Desktop Linux At Home link in the FAQ kbalona posted is an excellent site, I would definitely visit there before making a final decision.
