what are you running
video card
cpu
m/board
ram
power supply
brand
wattage

check the listings in the bios for voltages and temperatures and post them


check the fan is working and the computer is clear of any dust buildup

hi dai thanks for responding, the card is a leadtek nvidia gforce fx5900xt, (http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles/view.php?cid=3&id=1110&pg=) cpu is pentium 4 2.66ghz, motherboard is intel northwood 2, 1gb kingston ram, psu is a random make 500watt (34a on the 12v rail) everest reports the temp as 34c on desktop. i cannot get a read while i start a game as it crashes before i get chance. the fan works (quite slow dont know if this is normal) computer is clean :) want 2 give the fan on the card a clean but cannot remove it

Nothing a can of compressed air won’t sort for you! What's the idle temperature?
