Is windows defender an antivirus program?

should i have kaspersky and defender installed at the same time?

i ask this as i have always had both programs active and have never had any messages about them conflicting. i use the real time scanner on both.

Have you tried looking at the kaspersky web site for an answer? You can can have more than anti spyware.

Two antivirus application often conflict and cause problems, multiple antispyware programs do not. In fact, it is advisable to use more than one antispyware program since each does it's job a little differently

As long as each of these do not have realtime protection, this is true.

Rule of thumb:
One antivirus
One antispyware(often called antimalware these days) with realtime protection
Additional antimalware installed for on demand scans.

Having more than one real-time anti-spyware application running is not a good idea. Windows designers went to considerable trouble to see that one application does not interfere with another. But even when applications faithfully follow all the rules (which isn't always the case) there are still ways that trouble can arise. There should be no issues with non real-time applications.

I have just installed MSE and it seems to have anti-spyware features.

Does this mean I should disbale windows defender?
Which is better to protect me, the MSE spyware features or defender?
