.docx is extension of MS word.
.xls is extension of MS Excel.
If the file you have has extension .docx,it is office 2007 file & will not open in lower versions (office 98,XP,2003)....if it is a .doc file then it should open in any versionso if it is .docx you need to open it in a computer which has office 2007,then "save as" ,doc(98/XP/2003 file)....
What version of office do you have? If it's lower than 07, download the compatible mode. This will let you open 07 even if you have 03
.docx - Word 2007-2010
.xlsx - Excel 2007-2010
.doc - Word 97 onwards
.xls - Excel 97 onwards

If you are running an earlier version of the office system, I would recommend a few solutions:
1. Update/Upgrade
2. Click here to make it forward compatible. Note that this makes the file readable. I doubt it will let you modify it though.
3. Save it as a .doc file instead from the source, or after you have made your computer forward compatible as mentioned just before.
4. Install OpenOffice. It supports it as a free Office Suite alternative. Feel free to flick the files back and forth as you choose.

With the Office Compatability Pack installed, Office 2000-2003 can open and edit Office 2007 and later files. Features introduced with Office 2007, though (eg content controls, Excel rows beyond 65536) can't be used.

One other possibility not discussed in any of the replies so far is that the CD is no good or that kavipriyapg's PC simply can't read it.
kavipriyapg:
Can the file be copied to from the CD onto your PC? Does it open correctly on the PC on which it was created? Which version of Word was used to create the document? Which version of Word are you trying to open the file with? If it's a version prior to Word 2007, have you installed the Office Compatability Pack?
