Its basically about pixel density and having a bigger screen.

The newest standard to come out are the CAT-LEAP monitors. They're at 2560 x 1400 pixels. There are 1600p monitors too. They're usaully 30" and $1,000. Here's an example of a 1600p monitor.

Dell UltraSharp U3011 30" Black 7ms IPS-Panel Height, Swivel Adjustable Widescreen LCD Monitor 370 cd/m2 DC 100,000:1 (1000:1)
$1,100

1366 x 768 = 1,049,088 pixels
1920 x 1080 = 2,073,600 (just over double the pixels)
2560 x 1440 = 3,686,400 (almost double the pixels)
2560 x 1600 = 4,096,000 (double the resolution of 1080p)

Within a couple years you'll see more and more people adopting 1440p and 1600p monitors. As of now 1080 monitors are pretty cheap and most are pretty good quality.
