I will often listen to videos while leaving my HP Pavilion laptop unattended.

The screen goes dark after awhile, but simply returns with a tap of the mouse.

Today, when the screen image returned, more than half the luminosity had been lost. I tried raising the brightness both from the keypad, and by raising the cursor from settings, but neither worked.

Fortunately I could see enough to restart, and then all the luminosity returned, and the brightness variables from the keypad worked again as well.

All seems normal again, but there must be a reason why this happened.

Does anyone have a probable explanation? Is it likely to happen again?

Thanks in advance

There are two power saving features on a Laptop. One is for when the computer has it's power adapter plugged in and one with just the battery. To save power, especially when on battery only, the computer will dim for a few minutes before it sleeps, usually after just a 5 minutes or so.
You can change the power settings to have display never dim and always be on when plugged in.

Hi there,

Do you have your laptop running on battery? If so, laptop screens tend to dim a bit when the laptop is running on battery. This is so that the laptop conserves battery usage.
