I have just replaced my old desktop for a new one that comes with windows 7 64 bit. But not sure why ever since I started using the new desktop to unpack rars and especially rars with parts, both winrar and 7zip often have error messages like:

"Packed data CRC failed"
"The volume is corrupted"
"The file is corrupted"
etc.

For example, one of my family member who lives in Ireland wants to send me a bunch of videos and photos taken from a trip they went. He packed these bunch of files into three part rars and uploaded onto a file hosting website and so I have to download each one of them. I first tried jdownloader and downloaded them but couldn't unzip it. Then I tried to download in the normal way using firefox but still couldn't unpack. And I started to think is the pack corrupted?

But then I tried to use my netbook (with win7 32 bit starter os) and downloaded the files through this computer, it unpacked smoothly without a hassle. I then tried to copy the files I have downloaded using my new desktop to my netbook and try to unpack them there but again it saids the file is corrupted. That means somehow it's not winrar or 7zip's problem but the way my new computer writes the files into the hard disk creates corrupted files?

So what's wrong with my new computer? Even my old desktop won't have these problems. Is it because of the 32 64 bit difference? Perhaps my Ireland cousin packed the files with winrar 32 bit and i used 64 bit didn't work? Or is it the process that the file is being written under a 64 bit os different from a 32 that makes the files corrupted?

I have many other similar experience that my new computer didn't work unpacking but my old computer and netbook worked given the files are downloaded from my old computer or netbook (both 32 bit). Including files from newsgroups and torrents (but i won't go there because of restrictions).

But how can I fix my new PC? Is it because of installing the wrong java? wrong service pack? etc? Any other people have similar issues?

Thanks!

It's possible that the first download was corrupted. If you didn't clear your cache and delete the original file, the new download will pick up on the old stuff and you end up with the same corrupted file. Do both now and try again. To clear the cache in Firefox, go to Tools>Clear Recent History. Once there, you can change the number of days to clear and also what you want to clear. In this case, all you need to clear is the cache, so uncheck everything else. The number of days is up to you, but I usually clear everything. Why not clean up while you're at it. ;-)

Thanks Daifne for your suggestions. I used CCleaner to clear the cache and the extracting worked fine on the same files! So it's definitely what you said, I have to delete the cache.

But how come in my old PC and netbook I don't have this problem and I don't have to clear the cache in order for some files to extract successfully?

Is there a way to not clear the cache everytime and still being able to extract the zip/rar/7z files I want to extract?

Computer is just too complicated lol.

On the other computers, you stated that you downloaded them to each of them. That would be fresh copies that didn't get corrupted in the download process. The ones on your desktop got corrupted while downloading. This could have been caused by a slow, choppy Internet at the time you were downloading them, or, sometimes, it just happens.

It's impossible to predict when this will happen, but it shouldn't happen often, depending on what you are downloading and from where. You shouldn't need to clear the cache unless a file does get corrupted in downloading and you want to try again. It's certainly not an every time thing.
