its a high whiny noise that usually happens when winXP boots, but often happens earlier in start-up or randomly if it boots up completely. this always causes freezing and sometimes an instant reboot, once it froze so I left it, and I got constant high-beep low-beep tone going on from the PC speaker.

winXP professional
512 ddr ram
athlon 1.4
nVidia geforce 2 MX

can't imagine whats making this noise, Its not the PC speaker, or my HDDs, only other thing I can think of is the power supply.

only changes I've made recently is I got broadband

Welcome Stinko Man K........

What brand of motherboard are you using?

Check the fan on your CPU and see if it's making the noise....:D

The two things that normally make noise in a PC are the fans and the hard disk. Of the two, the fans are far more likely to be the offenders, so that's where I'd start.

Its not coming from the CPU fan, and thats the only fan I have. Thats why I suspected the Power Supply, as its the only other thing with moving parts, or maybe it has a hissing cap.

As for the mobo, I bought it two years ago and cant remember what it is. Is there any way I can tell from windows?

Well, the P/S has a fan, that's one of the fans I was talking about. :D It's not that difficult to put another fan into a P/S...

Sounds like it's going into low power mode!

Do you have another power supply that you can try in there? Something at least 300 watts.

Air coming out of the P/S does not mean the fan isn't making the noise when it powers up.

well the noise only happened when it froze and stopped immediately when rebooted, what could cause it to not make a noise one minute then start up the next? Also its not making the noise anymore.

I suspect I'd have to see this to figure out what the noise is, since it's not making much sense to me at this point.
