I dropped my laptop and banged one of the vents pretty hard and had overheating problems after that.

I dropped it off at someone's house toget it repaired and to my surprise he told me that its not the hardware that causes the overheating, but the software,

He told me he ran the laptop with something like vector linux and zeus and he said the laptop idles at around 40-45C , but when you go back to Windows 7 (original), it idles at 70-80C. Also, when it is in win7 safemode, it also idles at about 40C

Whats the problem here, how did a laptop falling down turn into a software problem and not hardware, weird...

Any ideas?

Thank you

also in Safe mode there were no drivers running. This would cause all hardware to only utilize the most basic of functions. Lower power = lower heat. Lower resolution and color depth = very little heat being generated by vid card. If it was a Linux Live CD then no drivers there either..

Man I am happily that I founded that thing! It is also true for me!....I run windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 (yeap not 11.10 :p) I tested the same game (there is a win 7 and linux version of the game....no wine tricks ;) ) and I saw my Celsium temperatures:

Win7 (Think that I had the computer just opened! -laptop-) temperatures:
Cpu
core 1: 65
core 2: 64
GPU: 67
Motherboard : 73

Ubuntu 11.04
CPU
Core 1: 43
Core 2: 45
GPU: 51
Motherboard: 53

A lot of that also can be accounted for because of the different OS'es handling power management differently. Windows is more geared for power saving so it is going to run the fans slower.. Ubuntu really isn't going to care about the power consumption as much and it will run the fan at a higher speed..

But I think there is the battery options for that reason
Gaming should cost more energy
balanced...Balanced...
Power saving means power saving D:

Whats the reasons of the battery plans if the windows have their system based on "Power saving?" o_O

Yeah I would love to ask the same thing...and the most important one actually...Providing (at least me I dont know about dereck) We have done EVERYTHING that prevents a laptop from casual overheatings (Install thermal thingie , fan , dust , battery etc.)

Well mine goes to 90 c but does not shut down :D Cripy laptop :p I shut it down by my own self
Btw dereck if u dont find a way I would suggest installing easily Ubuntu and remain there for 2-3 months and the laptop would be cool again ;) That is my 3d time happening this thing and I am going to do this thing if no solution will get find...But that means no hardcore games for 3 months :<

Sorry I am a little new to the computer scene, can you give me a simple explanation of what Ubuntu is and why installing it for 3 months would keep my computer cool o_O

It is a free Operating System (OS) U maybe have heard about "Linux" havent u? ^^ ... It is an operating system like windows...It is free actually and ... It does not be so heavy as windows...that means that ur laptop will "calm down" using ubuntu ... But take in though that Ubuntu does not support directx games (It does for Opengl games..But ur laptop will get overheated again :S)...There is a program called "wine" in ubuntu/Linux That supports directx games but u maybe lag etc. totally not for laptops ^^...I think the best Graphic card can run Crysis 2 in Ubuntu with 125 fps maxed out :p So imagine that slows down the performance a lot!....If no solution found I will switch to ubuntu for 3 months only browsign/hearing music etc. and not games...and no videos If I can avoid them...so my laptop will be ready in 3 months again...and I will be more carefull next time so my laptop will not start this overheating (strange actually) problem again

The problem is fixed:

it turned out that it was not anything related to hardware. There was a nasty attack on the computer like a virus of some sort trying to access my laptop and everything.

Ok guys I have new info for you and that will help you a lot I am sure!

Ok here it is :

~ When I switch the power plan to balanced (50% battery and 50% performance) or saving plan (battery saving plan) instead of gaming plan my pc does not get this VOUUUU....I just want to say that in gaming plan the temperature goes up..But damn what my laptop gets overheated? I have done EVERYTHING (or I think I done) and it stills there...Do u think something has been damaged inside my laptop? :S When u open the laptop u can see every important part so I really dont know and my dad is expert and he has not noticed any damage when he had opened my laptop (When I say opened I mean opened to clear out the dust and install new thermal paste) thanks in advance!

Now my problem has been repeated another 2 times in the past...I think Both of them were when I was playing cod4 for 1-2 months...At first time I had to go for 3 months in the jungle so My laptop remain untouchable for 3 months...the second time I just switched forever to my ubuntu (for 3 months...) and problem fixed (without playing games etc.... The second time was so bad that my laptop was doing that annoying VOUUUUU even seeing flash videos in utube!)... Now I was playing Again cod4 for 1-2 months and the problem occured again...And I need ur help...It sounds REALLY weird...Well after playing sometime a game the computer just does a VOUUUU and the temperature (according to a trustfull program) goes very up... I mean you see it going from 50c to 60....70 (in just 1-2 seconds) .... 80...90...95...Then when I close the game thee VOUUUUU just stops...and then the temperature goes back to 50-60....When the VOUUUU is being heard I touch my laptop from down and it is cold..Not COLD COLD...but still...it is "cool"....Definitely not a reason for overheaating...

Now what I have done:

~ Clearing dust
~ Installed thermal paste
~ (According to the thread creator...I scanned my win7 nothing..Reinstalled win7...problems still occures...)
~ Bought a cooler...Enermax Aeolus Premium

I just want to mention also that when I put the battery to low performance I have to wait around 3 hours to hear the VOUUUUUUU

PS: The most important parts are in Blank
