For HTML/PHP/Flash I suggest http://www.w3schools.com/ I believe they have practice questions for certification and even have resources for you to get a discount or something on your exam.

For photoshop there is a nice free clone that does everything photoshop can do--that I've seen at least. It's called GIMP. Gnu Image Manipulation Program. Find it here: http://www.gimp.org/

Does this help you any?

The W3 certs seem cheap enough to take anyways, but I don't think a lot of employers take them seriously because it's an at-home test, which aren't terrible difficult to cheat on.

True, but you could always take the practice tests for free and then take an official exam somewhere else and get certified.

Depends on what you take, in that case. I agree it's totally worth taking their practice tests and what not. Anything source of study is great - especially W3Schools. For something like PHP, I think the only official certification is Zend Certified Engineer/PHP Certified Professional. I've never taken it or really had much of an interest to. Zend is definitely a very specialized sector of the PHP community, I'm not sure how much of their stuff is included in the test. I'd love to see PHP.net get into certifications though.

First of all, I know it's a little late, but welcome to TSF!

I know. It'd be the equivalent of [religious deity here] going up to [religious follower here] and giving them their direct approval.

That being said, the best resource for up to date information on any given language will always be their site. W3Schools is the best resource for multiple languages, but if you want the most current go to the people who create/maintain the language.

PHP - http://php.net/
Flash - http://w3schools.com/flash/default.asp
(I tried to find some info on Adobe's site, but no dice)

Note: html.com is some webhost, not a site that teaches. I'm very upset about this. Also, [[Moderator's note: please do not post links to such sites in future, thank you —dm01]] is where I spend my free time--and they have free hosting for flash games, movies, etc. so if you want feedback that's the place. Of course we'd love to see your work as well!

Hey Liam, i urge you not to take the open university course. They are widely discredited by UK based designers and companies alike. They will give you the same if not similar resources as we've given you above, though they'll charge you £185 for the pleasure. They'll then assess you through their own "diploma", which isn't universally recognised (like W3school's is)...

If you want to go the self-taught route then i suggest going through the entirety of the W3schools site, which would give you an amazing grounding in web-development and design. Then spend money getting assessed through W3schools and a local college.

If you'd rather have a tutor - the benefits of which are that you're being taught by someone with experience, the drawbacks being that they can instill bad habbits in your style - then take a look at college courses... What's your background? (age, current qualification level, how much free time you have a week and generally when that is) it's hard to suggest anything solid without knowing what qualifications you have. But if you're of an applying age and have basic qualifications you can apply for a college course in web design/development from the beginning.

I'll warn you now, whichever route you take you will be pushed towards w3schools.com (with varied levels of additional content from tutors or material) so i suggest taking a look through it whenever you can.

Cheers,
Jamey

p.s. if you want to self-teach and need to learn photoshop i suggest lynda.com's video tutorials. They cost, but they have a "photoshop for web design" title which would suite your needs brilliantly. If not then i suggest scrounging up some free tutorials like the ones at tutorialized.com

The main thing a prospective employer is going to judge you on is your portfolio. After about five years, your experience becomes much more important than any piece of paper. It doesn't matter which route you go, as long as in the end you can produce a good web page.

Exactly. I'm trying to work with this impossible community center, I want to increase my portfolio. I'm hoping to work something out with them soon so I can add it to my portfolio. Everything I could possibly suggest to you has been suggested... but I wish you luck.
