I am trying to help a friend who has a peer to peer LAN. Each PC runs W7 Home Premium.

His phone company [ TPC ] wants remote access. TPC said they need toinstall some software on the LAN's server. TPC person with whom I spoke [ admin person, not tech support person ] was unaware if their software can run on a peer to peer LAN. Said person didn't know on which OSs their software will run.

The LAN sits behind a DSL router/ modem, for internet access.

All computers on the LAN use ethernet.

I have used NT4 & Win2000 Pro & XP Pro as servers. I have no experience with Linux.

Is there a version of W7 which can function as a server, using W7 software?

If not, is there a 3rd party program taht can be installed on W7? If so, which program?

I've searched through hundreds of links. I must not be using the correct search string.

Thanks for your help.

Any OS, regardless of version, can be a server.

I would be very suspicious of any company wanting remote access to anyones "server" especially if they don't know what OSs are supported for their software.

Have them send a disk to your friend along with what OS's are supported for thier software.

Yeah, I see no reason the phone company needs access to any of your computers.

I think that is an excellent idea, although I still don't see why the phone company needs to install any software on the network either.

In fact, why is the phone company involved at all? They should be on the other side of the router and have no need to access his network (everything on his side of the router) at all - unless your friend is using their tech support to help set up this sever and they are trying to avoid a housecall.

Does the sever need to be accessed remotely? Or just by the local computers connected via Ethernet?

wc00 you determine what OS to buy by what you wish to do with it.

Any OS can be used as a server. A server serves files by defination.

Now if you want a higher level of networking, like running a Domain Controller, you need a server OS that supports that like 2008 server.

No, win7 can not be a domain controller.

I think you need to spend some time educating yourself on two subjects.
peer to peer networking
client server networking

Web search both and if you still have questions as to what OS you want to use let us know.
