Resolution
To resolve this problem, make sure File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is enabled. To do this, follow these steps:

Log on to the computer by using administrative credentials.

Double-click My Computer, double-click Control Panel, and then double-click Network and Dial-Up Connections.

Double-click the network connection you want to modify, and then click Properties.

On the General tab in the Components checked are used by this connection area, locate File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks. If it is not listed, install it by clicking the Install button and then double-clicking Service.

Make sure that the check box next to File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks is selected. This setting makes shared resources available on the network.

I, like I said, have Googled this to death and have checked and rechecked every possible cause?

File and Print Sharing, ON... both on Private networks, both PC's on Private and the same network.

This page, is about the same problem I have, Redirecting and it lists probably most, if not all, what I have tried.

I even switched out the Router 'just in case'.

In any event, this is not truly about using the LAN, but basically WHY I can't even see my own PC, which I think is the root problem?

Many of the same issues on the web too, like this one, I cannot see my computer on the network in windows 11 - Microsoft Q&A, and no solution.

I even disabled my Security Suite thinking it was blocking Net View... but it was not.

Don't forget, other PC's can see my PC AND access files and write to my disk... proof of that is the screen capture from my wife's PC, I used Screen Capture there and SAVED it to my PC to post here.

I also thought MAYBE the Credentials were messed up, but no, at least not for my Wife's PC, and my PC I run as Administrator, I should not be denied, and edited my Credential for this PC to be sure, no help.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was, A) Something simple I've overlooked or not discovered on the web, or B) a W11 bug, but it WAS working on W11 in the past, maybe 7 or so months ago?

 

Open Disk Management and post it. I have a feeling your main drive hasn't been set up properly.

 

OK, but this has NOT been changed since 2020 when the PC was bought, and had worked before?

Not sure what you are looking for, but I almost think it has to do with Windows no longer have the Master Browser function? Also ran SFC and DISM commands, no problems found.

 

Time for a new (bigger) disc or getting rid of lots of files or junk.

Stuff can be moved off of it, but what does that have to do with NET VIEW working or not? It would if the share_name is used, and it is on-line and other PC can work with the drives...

If space were a problem, then it would never work.

I've not seen any reference or documentation on how much space is needed on C: anywhere, can you provide a pointer?

How much DO I need by the way? I can move a large program or some saved data off of C:... what should I get too?

 

Your C: drive has 9% free, approx 42GB ... depending upon how much data it needs to store, this might be considered massive or it might be considered insufficient.

 

OK, I was under the impression that only for the X64 version 20GB's of free space were needed, and I had more.

Never got any 'out of space' notice or anything else but the Error from Net View.

But I 'humored' you and cleared space, still fails:

If you think I am alone with NET VIEW problems, check this link out, Redirecting and in it are the usual fix suggestions (none about disk free space) as well and links to some, but many people have the same or similar problems.

 

See if a bios update is available.

 

Nope, on the latest, Dell XPS8940, BIOS 2.19.1, and have been on prior ones with it failing. I think this happened as early as late last year.

Windows up-to-date as well:

I rarely use my wife's W10Pro PC, and usually it is to exchange files to or from her PC, and occasionally to execute a program off of my PC and run on hers. Well, I just opened on her PC a CMD prompt and ran NEW VIEW, SAME error I'm getting on mine... and I know it DID work there too.

She has a 512GB SSD with 300GB's free, so it is NOT space.

I sort of think maybe a Master Browser problem or related to this, [MS-BRWS]: Overview ???

 

Let me share some other data points that I have/done.

Originally, I had WiFi 6 with a TP-Link AX55 router using an Intel AX1650i Killer M.2 network adapter. Problem existed.

I got a Wifi 7 router, TP-Link BE65 Deco, and it still had a problem.

I replace the M.2 card with an Intel Wifi 7 BE200, and I now have wireless speed that matches the 1Gbps down ISP speed (plus the over provisioned speed) and the problem exists..

So it is not related I'd say to any PC Network h/w. Wife's PC is still Wifi 6 speed.

To achieve all that space on the present C: drive I moved MS Flight Simulator off of it to a mechanical drive... and although it works, loading is SLOW and I may move it back to C: or just buy a 1TB Internal SSD and put that in and move it to that drive... Want to open the case and make sure it has proper spare connector's to do that (soon I hope).

 

Are the routers approved by your ISP? If not, that can cause some problems. If so, call the ISP for some help.

 

They, the ISP, only need to approve Modems or modem/routers... after that, they do not care.

3 different router's I've used, same problem.

I guess you are 'punting' this one, you have no suggestions.

I know my way around computers and Windows... Google search should make that clear. I just don't have access to MS code and some debug tools. I don't think the problem is on my end, that is the parts I have other than the OS. Too many others have the same or similar issues, and at one time, it did work... Suspect, MS Windows...

SMB1 enabled on both PC's, and all options for it.

 

I even checked the features enabled on both PC's, W10 has an SMB Direct choice, not on W11 though. Other than that, W10 and W11 features are the same 'choices'.

Yeah, those are checked on both the W11 and W10 PC's:

WOW, I fixed it and DID not know it!!!!

ROUTER problem!!!!

TP-LINK, has a SHARED USB drive... except the ROUTER was not seeing the shared drive but had USB function turned on!!!

Got a replacement and the drive DOES show in the Router now!

On a whim I did a NET VIEW:

Boy, I sure think the router f/w is the issue. Still, NET VIEW works fine, but I've discovered I can only SEE my PC with NET VIEW \\Sharename or Windows FileViewer set to NETWORK, and my wife's PC, the same, her PC contents only. Get a "SYSTEM ERROR 5 has occurred, Access Denied", when I try to access her PC and when tries mine.

Yes, tried every possible setting and credential, you name it, all good.

Has to be the router f/w, and I'm in contact with the vendor. I may just put my old router back. Took me months and an exchanged router to get this far... too much time wasted.
