w/d 500g external (whants to formatt)

every time I connect my external hdd,It keeps asking me to formatt the drive,also if I try to copy and paste a file from the drive it takes for ever,any suggestions would be great,I,ve scanned the drive with different software ,all clean results,

If you have anything important on the drive I would copy it to a safe location. Then run a drive diagnostic from Western Digital and see if any errors are returned.

You can try a file recovery program to see if that can recover any of the data. If that doesn't work try the diagnostic and see what errors are returned.

Does disk managemant show the drive at the correct capacity, and what does it show for file system type?
