I'm hoping someone can help me... I have a business laptop that
is a Dell Vostro 1720. The first symptom that started was when It booted up intermittently it would not have any icons on the desk top. Them it started locking up right after booting up. Now it doesn't even turn on. No sounds or lights! My power supply light is on but the laptop is dead and it doesn't matter if I plug it into the wall or us battery power. My first guess is the motherboard. Any suggestions would be great. Thank you in advance.

Hello, and welcome to TSF,

Please list all the specs of your computer.
Also, this is an extremely high traffic website, with tons of people needing help in tons of different categories- so please, try to be patient.

Have you tried swapping out the power supply for a different one? If you've taken any steps to attempt to figure it out on your own, please list the steps you've taken as well.

Do you do a lot of gaming? Video editing?
What's the computers primary usage, and how long (average) is it on in a day?

My (amateur) guess is that it may be your power supply/motherboard. Please wait for one of the resident professionals/team members to stop by and verify this.

Best of luck,
Roo

Sorry for the impatience on my part, I do a lot with this computer including reflashing PCMs in cars and trucks in my repair shop. I'm pretty frustrated with Dell at the moment. (my printer died after two years of a four year lease and now they want to charge me big bucks to repair this laptop)

This computer is all business, Microsoft office, automotive trade programs and that's about it. I've done electrical repairs on vehicles for the past 30 years and am pretty good with a soldering iron. I just don't want to replace parts that don't need to be replaced.

I tried to turn it on without the battery and it still doesn't do anything. I unplugged the power supply/cord and checked the voltage output at the end of the cord and I got 19.5 volts DC. This is what the power supply says on the outside of it. Thanks again!
