I have a three year old Dell Inspiron. The other day the volume suddenly dropped to about half the usual. It is definitely a problem with the computer itself as I checked every volume control panel and made sure it wasn't my external speakers or cable. Is this a driver problem? Are there hidden controls somewhere that slipped by me?

If it is only a problem with the settings (registry or sound configuration) then System Restore should fix it. If not, then you either need to reinstall the driver (available on the Dell support site: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads) or it is a hardware problem.

Unfortunately, if it is a hardware problem that means the motherboard would have to be replaced to fix it since the sound card is integrated on all the Dell notebooks.

If you are not sure which driver to get, or have other questions on this, I am more than happy to help out any way I can.
