Hello I need help with my volume control

I have windows 98se and my volume control does not work I installed and reinstall all drivers and it says that I need to activate my mixer device. I can not remove my sound card as it's attached to the motherboard. I have also clicked on the hard drive detection and nothing happens because all drivers are installed, working and no conflicts are detected. This happened when my computer froze and it came back with no volume. If anybody can help me it would be wonderful. I just need some sound until I get rid of this old thing...Thanks A Million

When you look in the Device Manager are you seeing any yellow question marks?

What is the make/ model of your computer?

What is saying you need to activate your mixer device?

I HAVE AN IBM 2270 APTIVA THAT I PURCHASED IN 2000 WITH WINDOWS 98SE ALREADY INSTALLED.THERE ARE NO YELLOW QUESTION MARKS NEAR MY SOUNDS IN THE DEVICE MANAGER. I HAVE SINCE TRIED TO REINSTALL ALL THE MULTIMEDIA FILES BUT MY COMPUTER NEVER CAME WITH THE WINDOWS 98 DISK AND SINCE I DONT HAVE ONE IT JUST REMOVES THE FILES BECAUSE IT ASKS ME TO PUT IN MY 98 DISK.

OK IF I BUY ANOTHER 98SE DISK....CAN I CAN USE IT JUST TO REINSTALL MY MEDIA FILES ONLY OR WILL I HAVE TO REINSTALL FULL WINDOWS AGAIN? I PLAN ON GETTING A NEW COMPUTER SINCE I HAD THIS ONE FOR 7 SEVEN YEARS NOW...I THINK ITS TIME TO GIVE IT UP..IT BECOMING A HEADACHE!!

Do you have Winzip installed or some other type of software that will unzip it?

I would make a folder in C:\ and call it audio drivers and unzip to that folder. Then go into the Device Manager and update the drivers and point it to that folder

Hi Cayndie330

If you are using the drivers that GeekGirl linked you to, just double-click on that ".exe" file -- it will self-extract (you can accept the default location that the 'option-box' suggests).

If, during the installation, you are prompted for a Windows 98 CD -- which you don't have -- click on the "Browse" button, and see if you can navigate to this folder:

C:\Windows\Options\Cabs

...many major brand-name computers have a copy of the Windows 98 installation files in this folder. Sound drivers often ask for the Win98 CD for help installing the "Midi" or "Gameport" device on your onboard sound - some Windows system files help support those.

Best of luck
. . . Gary

[ & Hi There, Geekgirl! ] -- update -- looks like we were typing at the same time (and my old hands are slower) -- Yes, creating a new folder would work well, too.

Hi again

If the self-extracting files didn't automatically start an installation procedure, you may have to start it yourself - manually.

Try this
1) Click on the your Windows "Start" button, then on "Run".
2) Next to the little white box that appears, click on the "Browse" button.
3) You will see a "tree view" of folders - try to get to the folder where you placed the extracted driver files [if you created a special folder for them, go to that, if you accepted the default - go to that location -- and if you can't remember where they went, run the driver's executable (".exe") again & write down where the files extract to].
4) Once inside the folder that the driver files were extracted to, look for a "start.exe" or "install.exe" or "setup.exe" -- or an .exe file that uses some form of the sound devices name (such as "creative.exe" or similiar). If you find a "setup.exe" try that - select it & click "Open" then "OK" & it should start installing.

My guess is that the installer program hasn't run yet.

If that's not it, let us know.

Sometimes you need to manually place the icon in the taskbar.
Open Control Panel, double-click mulitmedia, place a checkmark in "Show Volume Control on the Taskbar" click Apply.
If there is a check mark in there, remove it then replace it and click apply.

Hi again

Try downloading, extracting, and running Setup for the sound drivers again. It still sounds like the installer hasn't run yet. The drivers Geekgirl linked you to look like an exact-match, so they have a very good chance of working, once installed.

Keep at it, you'll get there.

Hi Againnnn!!..lol

I Reinstalled All Possible Drivers And Setup.exe I Could Fine..lol And Still Nothing. I Right Clicked On The Volume Icon And Went To Properties...here's What I See In The Short Cut Tab...

Target: C:\windows\sndvol32.exe
Start In: "blank"
Shortcut Key: None
Run: Normal Window

When I Point The New Driver To Install When I'm In Device Manager..it Tells Me That Windows Already Has The Best Driver Already Installed. But When I Click Let "me" Find The Best Driver..it Gives Me A List Of Hardware Devices And I Dont Know What The Manufacturor Of My Sound Card Is...i Know It Says Soundmax Intergrated Audio In Device Manager Under Sounds..but It Doesnt Show When In The List Of Hardware When I Try To Reinstall The Drivers...my Sound Card Is Also Embedded On My Motherboard..so There's No Way I Can Replace It....what Am I Doing Wrong?:4-dontkno

Hi again

Well, since the drivers from driversguide didn't turn out so hot, let's try those from IBM/Lenovo & see what happens. The Lenovo site loads very slowly at times, so be patient when downloading the drivers and the instructions.

There are links to the instructions & the download on this webpage ---
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?sitestyle=lenovo&lndocid=MIGR-39974

See if it goes better this time --- I hope so!
. . . Gary

[P.S. --- even if these drivers work out OK, you might want to run malware scans, and consider running some diagnostics on your computer - since we don't yet know what caused the driver troubles in the first place]

Where is this icon located that you right clicked on? If you right click on the volume icon that is in the taskbar the only options I am seeing are Adjust Audio Properties and Open Volume Controls. There is no shortcut so to speak.

It looks as if you may be missing an important sytem file(s), you will need the Win98 cd if you want to get the sound back.

IS IT POSSIBLE TO REINSTALL MY WINDOWS WITH THE SETUP.EXE IN THE OPTIONS FOLDER THAT GARY WAS TALKING ABOUT? I DO HAVE MY KEY TO MY WINDOWS 98SE I JUST DONT HAVE A DISK..MY CPU NEVER CAME WITH ONE...

GARY I TRIED THAT DRIVER AND STILL NOTHING..I THINK I WILL NEED TO WIPE MY HARD DRIVE OUT AND START FROM SCRATCH.

LAST YEAR MY COMPUTER CRASHED SEVERELY AFTER I DOWNLOADED A PROGRAM...I NEVER INSTALLED IT BECAUSE IT ASKED ME TO DO A DISK CLEAN UP AFTER I DID WHEN I REBOOTED MY WINDOWS CAME UP AS BEING A FIRST INSTALLATION...I FOUND A WAY TO DO A RESTORE (FROM THIS SITE  ) AND IT WAS RESTORED....BUT ONE THING WAS MISSING..MY PRODUCT RECOVERY SOFTWARE THAT IBM PROVIDES, ITS A PROGRAM THAT WIPES YOUR SYSTEMS HARDDRIVE BACK TO NEW. IS THERE A WAY I CAN FIND THIS ON MY COMPUTER MANUALLY?

I KNOW IF I DO A HARD DRIVE WIPE OUT I CAN GET MY SOUND BACK TO NORMAL

THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL YOUR HELP GUYS I REALLY DO APPRECIATE THIS
